Learner driver told to pay £1,500 after causing £16,000 damage to Telford house
A learner driver who crashed his car into the side of a bungalow, causing £16,000 damage, has been ordered to pay back just £1,500.
Coner Corbett panicked after the crash, threw his keys into a bush and ran home.
He appeared at Telford Magistrates Court, where he faced three changes following the accident in Chockleys Drive, Leegomery.
The charges were driving without due care and attention, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
The court heard the 22-year-old was driving his silver Honda Civic when he heard a "large bang" and panicked, causing him to lose control of his car.
The vehicle left the road, went down an embankment and smashed into the property at speed.
Corbett, of Chockleys Meadow, Leegomery admitted he was driving too fast, he only had a provisional licence and the car did not display L plates.
The court also heard there were three passengers in the car but no one was injured. Corbett was treated for shock following the accident on July 16.
Mr Tim Talbot-Webb, prosecuting, told the court Corbett left the scene, adding: "At first he told officers the car had a mechanical fault, he did not know anything about the collision and that his car may have been taken by someone else.
"This was false and the car has been checked and there are no faults."
Defending Corbett, Mr Andrew Choudhury told the court how he was due to take his driving test and had been learning for six months.
He said: "At the time of the accident my client had been bought the car by his parents as a well done for getting a job off his own back and working hard to get it. He had got himself a job working in security.
"Since the accident he has lost his job and any future career in security, and on top of that his parents have disowned him."
Corbett was ordered to pay back £1,500, which included £300 to the Wrekin Housing Trust, who owned the property.
The outstanding £15,500 will be paid through insurance.
His licence was also revoked and he was given six points.
