The man is believed to have been walking in front of a train to the north of Craven Arms where he had got off as a rail passenger.

He was walking in the direction of Marshbrook, nine miles from Craven Arms, early in the morning on Monday.

Andy May, a company director who lives at Station House along the rail line at Marshbrook, said: "A man alighted a train at Craven Arms and walked along the line to Marshbrook in front of the train.

"Six British Transport Police officers, two West Mercia Police officers, one Network Rail official and an ambulance crew attended.

"He was detained on the track half a mile from Marshbrook and later taken away by ambulance."

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "We were called to the line between Wistanstow and Marsh Brook in Shropshire on Monday following a report at 8.40am of a man trespassing on the tracks.

"Officers from British Transport Police and West Mercia Police attended after the man refused to leave the tracks when spoken to by a train driver.

"The man, in his 40s and from the local area, was detained by officers and has been taken to a place of safety," he said.
