Nicole Jones, of Tanybryn, Llanidloes, Mid Wales, admitted wounding.

She had punched the "highly vulnerable" victim to the face and hit him with a torch, Caernarfon Crown Court was told yesterday.

Prosecutor Simon Mintz said the torch had a broken lens and was bloodstained.

The victim needed stitches in the back of his head and had a badly swollen eye and bruises.

He told the judge: "She left me unconscious and bleeding on the floor of my flat. I could have died. Emotionally the assault has left me filled with fear. Violence is no part of my nature."

He added that he had moved out of Llanidloes to a refuge.

"The bloodstains on my living room wall are a constant reminder," he said.

Judge Niclas Parry told Jones: "In drink and in anger and utter frustration you attacked your victim, I am satisfied using the torch as a weapon.

"This is a case that goes to underline domestic violence can work the other way. Men can be the victim of domestic violence. It's clear from what we have heard from your victim that he has been badly affected by this attack."

The court heard the couple had been out socialising that night, last July.

The judge told Jones: "You have clearly acted entirely out of character. You have no previous convictions. I bear in mind your own vulnerability and health issues."

A 12-month suspended jail term was imposed, with a rehabilitation activity and 60 of hours unpaid work. A five-year restraining order was made for the sake of both of them, Judge Parry added.

Myles Wilson, defending, said the probation service felt they could reduce the risk of re-offending.
