Two fire crews were called out to a house in Lydbury North on Sunday but there was found to be no fire and no knowledge of anyone raising the alarm when firefighters arrived on site at the village near Bishop's Castle.

Constable Anne Gutteridge, speaking for West Mercia Police's safer neighbourhood team for Bishop's Castle, said police were investigating and had seized a copy of an audio recording for evidence.

She added: "The hoax call was made on October 9 and the man was arrested on October 11.

"He has been bailed and will appear in court at the end of October."

Malcolm Stevenson, speaking for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Appliances from Clun and Bishop's Castle attended. They were there for just over an hour.

"They quickly established it was a hoax but were waiting for police to arrive to liaise with them which is what we normally have to do. It costs us time and money."
