£3,700 raised to repair vandalised stained glass window at Shifnal church
People in Shifnal have raised almost £4,000 to repair an historic stained glass window that was smashed by vandals.
Vandals badly damaged the window at St Andrew's Church earlier this year.
The window was created by artist William Morris.
A protective grate across the window was removed before a section of the William Morris window was broken.
The vandals then climbed an external staircase at the church to smash more leaded windows.
An appeal was launched and the community rallied around to raise funds for the church window, raising almost £4,000.
The Reverend Chris Thorpe said he had been saddened by the attack but felt "overwhelmed" by the support they have had from the people of Shifnal.
It is believed the attack happened following an outdoor service held in May.
David Senior, church member, said: "We got permission from Lichfield Diocese to carry out the repair with a specialised contractor.
"Fortunately we had a photograph of it before it was damaged, he worked with that to bring it back to how it should be.
"Each pane has got wording on it.
"We've had public collections as well as some of it was covered by the insurance, we need to replace the protective grate too.
"I think it's brilliant, to be able to restore it to what it should be and to update the window.
"The windows date back to just after World War Onc.
"I think it was about £3,700 raised, that's a lot of money, we had collection boxes in the local shops in the town.
"It was a very good public response."
