BMW tracked from Shrewsbury to Telford using iPhone app after violent robbery
A stolen BMW was traced using an iPhone tracking app after attackers punched the car's owner during a robbery in Shropshire.
West Mercia Police said the incident happened in Shrewsbury in the early hours of Thursday.
The man's rucksack containing his wallet and keys had gone missing and, at about 8.45am when the man woke up in a marquee in the Quarry, two men and a woman walked in.
It is said he was knocked to the ground and punched and his mobile phone was taken.
He suffered neck and facial injuries but did not need to go to hospital. The three suspects are said to have driven away in his black BMW.
It is believed the same car was then involved in a crash on the A5 in the Telford direction, where the vehicle failed to stop.
But the thieves did not count on the victim's iPhone being in the car and that the mobile phone's tracking app had been installed.
The app allowed police to track the BMW to the Lawley area of Telford, 14 miles from where it was stolen, a short while afterwards.
A 27-year-old man from Shrewsbury was then arrested on suspicion of robbery, driving with alcohol above the legal limit and dangerous driving.
A 37-year-old woman from Shrewsbury and a 22-year-old man from Shrewsbury were arrested on suspicion of robbery.
All three are currently in police custody.
Officers investigating the robbery want to speak to any members of the public who may have seen individuals acting suspiciously around the Quarry area.
