Damage has been caused to a Shropshire village hall after it was targeted by would-be thieves.

Roof tiles were smashed as they broke into Millennium Hall in Cockshutt, near Ellesmere, on Monday evening.

It is believed they entered the property through a glass panel on the roof of the foyer between 6pm and 7pm.

Steve Milns, vice-chairman of the village hall committee, said: "It is very frustrating. It is sheer wanton vandalism.

"They clambered over the roof and have broke roof tiles. I have been up there to try and secure it.

"Two people have been caught on CCTV but it is not clear enough to see who they are. They were targeting the bar but were not successful. Luckily the whole place is alarmed.

"We have a cold cellar so we keep things locked in there. They wouldn't have found anything behind the shutters to the bar."

Mr Milns added a new "top of the range" CCTV system is being installed at the village hall on Saturday.

Laura Maltby, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "Police were called to reports of a burglary at the Millennium Hall on Shrewsbury Road shortly before 7.45pm on Monday.

"It appears entry was forced sometime between 6.25pm and 6.35pm that evening.

"It is not believed anything was taken but officers are keen to speak to people who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the incident."
