CCTV: Police seek witnesses after hoax Newport 'firearm' call

Police have issued two CCTV images showing potential witnesses to a man making a hoax call from a phone box in Newport.

Published

The phone call was made at around 6pm on Thursday, November 10, when the caller claimed his partner had been threatened with a firearm. Police were deployed and it was later determined the report was a hoax call.

There were also two hoax calls to the fire service made from the same phone box earlier that week.

PC Lee Thomas said today: "It is very concerning when people make hoax calls to the emergency services.

"Emergency calls necessitate a quicker response and it puts members of the public at an unnecessary risk, if the call is, in fact, a hoax.

"We are looking to speak to the two men pictured in the CCTV images, or anyone else who was in the area of High Street, Newport, at the time, who may be able to help us by giving a description of the man entering the phone box."
