Flare and assault sees three arrested at Wolves v Stoke FA Cup clash
A teenager from Stafford was arrested after a flare was set off during Wolves' FA Cup match in Stoke, police revealed today.
The 16-year-old was the third person detained on Saturday after two men were arrested for an attack on a member of a pub's door staff more than four hours before kick off.
The security worker needed medical treatment to the eye after the alleged assault which happened at around 10.50am at the Wheatsheaf pub.
Simon Evans, aged 33, of Wentworth Road, Wolverhampton, has been charged with assault by beating, while Christopher Ward, 30 of Farm Road, Brierley Hill, was charged with a public order offence.
Both men have been bailed to appear at Newcastle Magistrates Court on February 7.
The Stafford teenager has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Aside from the three arrests, Staffordshire Police said the third-round clash passed 'relatively peacefully' and the force praised the work of the officers and stewards at the game.
Around 5,000 Wolves fans travelled to the bet365 Stadium to watch their side upset the odds and beat Stoke 2-0.
Ch Insp Pete Owen, who was match commander for the day, said: " It's fair to say it was a busy match for us and tensions were high.
"However, effective deployment of stewards and officers on the ground meant there were no other incidents during the game.
"A great deal of planning had gone into how we approached the match in view of the extra away fans who were allowed to attend.
"The stewards worked really effectively with our officers and together, we ensured there was little in the way of disorder."
