Shropshire man, 21, raped woman as she slept after New Year celebrations, court told
A 21-year-old Shropshire man raped a woman as she slept after New Year's celebrations, a court heard.
David Bird is alleged to have raped the woman after she went to bed intoxicated.
Bird, of The Trench, near Ellesmere, is standing trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court accused of raping the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, during the early hours of New Year's Day 2015.
Miss Rebecca Wade, prosecuting, said: "Bird took advantage of her while she was asleep."
After seeing the new year in at a pub, the victim was in an intoxicated state and was put to bed at a flat.
While the two were alone in the flat the alleged attack is said to have occurred.
Bird denies raping the woman, but according to the prosecution, he accepts sex happened between the two but said she had consented. The trial continues.
