Out of control cyclist fleeing Telford store security staff smashed into woman
A woman suffered a fractured cheekbone and an injury to her nose when she was run down outside a Telford supermarket by a man fleeing store security staff, a court heard.
Rebecca King had been using a cashpoint at the Asda store in Donnington, Telford, when she was knocked to the floor by the speeding cyclist.
Viktoras Muromcevas, of Dinthill, Hollinswood, Telford, who had previous cautions for shoplifting, was said to have been trying to evade store security staff.
The 38-year-old factory worker was given a two-year community order when he appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court.
Muromcevas admitted causing injury by wanton or furious driving while riding a pedal cycle.
Judge Jim Tindal said that the charge was equivalent to an offence of causing grievous bodily harm.
The judge told the defendant that when he rode off at high speed he had been so fixed and intent on getting away from security that he was not paying proper attention and collided with the victim.
The Lithuanian was also ordered to complete 200 hours unpaid work and must pay Miss King £2,000 compensation for her injuries.
The court heard that the defendant was known to the security staff who approached him when he was seen at the store on September 10 last year.
Mr David Pojur, prosecuting, said that Muromcevas had ridden off at speed and bundled into the victim. He abandoned his cycle and began to run off.
He said Miss King suffered a broken right cheek bone, had damage to her nose, two black eyes and injuries to her shoulder, hip and elbow from the collision.
Miss Caroline Harris, for Muromcevas, said her client was a hard worker who did 12 hour shifts as a packer at a Whitchurch factory.
She said he did not realise how serious the collision was until he was shown the CCTV footage of the incident outside the store.
Miss Harris said he accepted being thoughtless and reckless and had no regard for the victim at the time, but there had been no intent and the extent of Miss King's injuries were deeply unfortunate.
