Burglars tried to get into the reception cabin at the Wrekin Riders BMX Track in Dawley.

It happened some time between 8pm on Thursday and 8am on Friday morning.

Though the thieves failed to get in, they took the lock and chain which were used to get access to the track.

Kieran Edwards, who runs the track with a small committee of volunteers, said: "All of our volunteers are exactly that.

"They work full time and give up most of their spare time for the benefit of our children.

"The break-in happened after our first mid-week training session of the year and following our first round of the British BMX series.

"We have had excellent support from Bulldog Security of Much Wenlock, who have stepped up security once again at our site.

"We will not be defeated, we will continue with the same enthusiasm and passion we have always had."

The track, on Duce Road, attracts dozens of riders every weekend, from three year olds to adults. Some have previously qualified for the BMX World Championships.

In February last year, the container of track maintenance equipment was broken into, with hundreds of pounds of equipment stolen.

Mr Edwards added: "We would urge anyone who sees anything suspicious around our track at any time of the day to contact the police.
