Welshpool town centre garage blaze under investigation
A row of town centre garages went up in flames, with firefighters battling the blaze into the early hours.
Five crews were called to a fire which engulfed 12 garage units off Welshpool's central Salop Road at about 9.30pm on Saturday, and police are now looking into what may have started the blaze.
No one was hurt in the fire, though a handful of nearby vehicles were damaged or destroyed.
A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "It was a property fire involving 12 units of about 60 metres by five metres.
"Two cars next to the units were destroyed by fire and another two had smoke and fire damage.
"There were 25 firefighters on the scene and it took them about three hours to put it out, it was quite a long-lasting incident, which was to do with the size of the property.
"Gas and electric utility companies have also been on the scene to isolating supplies."
He said those attending included two crews from Welshpool itself, one crew from Llanfair Caereinion, one from Llanfyllin and one from Montgomery.
They used a total of five water jets, two main and three covering, along with breathing apparatus to put out the blaze, and left the scene in the early hours, he said.
He added that fire crews returned to the scene on Sunday to check it over – together with police, as the cause of the blaze is as yet unknown.
"There is an ongoing investigation between us and the police into what started it," he said.
Everyone in the area was accounted for and there were no casualties.
