A458 cafe murder probe: Forensics officers continue search near Shrewsbury

Forensics officers are still combing a suspected murder scene near Shrewsbury as they attempt to discover how a 67 year-old-man died.

More than eight police vehicles remained at Tony's Diner on at A458 in Halfway House throughout Wednesday, with forensic tents set up at the front and rear of the property.

The victim, known by local residents as "Mr B", is understood to have worked at Tony's Diner for many years.

One nearby resident, Kevan Nightingale, the landlord at the Halfway House Inn, said the man had visited the pub every Monday night, describing him as "always cheerful".

He said the man often visited the pub with his family, was a big Manchester United fan and would regularly watch matches at the pub.

Mr Nightingale said: "He came in every Monday and he would always ask me to put the football on.

"It is very sad. He was a really nice guy, he was always cheerful. They would be arguing over who would buy the drinks between him and the regulars and he would always come in early so he could get the round. It is just very sad."

West Mercia Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the man who died, only revealing that he was 67 and from Halfway House.

He was discovered at the roadside diner by paramedics following a 999 call at around 4.40pm on Monday.

Police say he was found with serious injuries to his head and torso.

The police were subsequently called and launched a murder investigation.

They arrested a 65-year-old man from Shrewsbury on suspicion of murder on Tuesday.

Officers wearing white protective clothing and gloves could be seen working in a tent at the front of the diner throughout Wednesday.

The entire car park also remained cordoned off with police officers guarding the fencing at the back of the property.

Two bouquets of flowers had also been left at the scene.

Police say they are are still looking to speak to anyone who was in the diner on the afternoon or evening of Sunday, June 25.

They have also asked for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area on Sunday and Monday to get in touch.
