'Blot on our landscape': Anger over caravan full of rubbish dumped near Newport

Fly tipping has been branded a “blot on our beautiful landscape” by council officials after the latest discovery of an abandoned caravan filled with paving slabs, garden rubbish and old tyres.

The mess was dumped off a road in Cherrington, near Newport, and was left to be collected at the cost of the taxpayer.

The waste left in the caravan, which was found on Saturday, will now be examined for any evidence of where it came from in the hopes that the culprits can be tracked down.

Today Telford & Wrekin Council asked for the community to be its eyes and ears in the fight against crimes like this so that they can be prevented in the future. Another councillor branded the find as “fly-tipping at its worst”.

Paul Fenn, environmental enforcement manager for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “Fly tipping is a crime and a blot on our beautiful landscape.

“This fly tip was unusual because the rubbish was contained within the abandoned caravan which was towed away for investigation.

“We do all we can to catch fly-tippers and we will try to identify who was behind the dumping of this caravan. We also ask the community to help put a stop to it by being our eyes and ears.”

Councillor Jim Berry, chairman of Tibberton and Cherrington Parish Council, said: “It is fly tipping at its worst.

“I hope the council are investigating it and try to find who left it there.

“They’ve filled it up and just dumped it. Someone has probably paid to have it all taken away and now it’s been dumped.

“People just disrespect the countryside.”
