Pensioner faces court hearing after death crash on A458 in Shropshire

A pensioner has appeared in court, charged with causing a crash in which another driver died on a busy road between Shrewsbury and Much Wenlock.

Stephen Griffiths, aged 67, of Mold, died following the collision between his blue Audi and a black Land Rover Discovery.

The accident happened on January 4 on the A458 between Cressage and Cound.

John William Beckett, aged 76, of Greyfriars Drive, Bromsgrove, was driving the Land Rover.

He faced a charge of causing Mr Griffiths' death by driving without due care and attention when he appeared at Telford Magistrates Court.

No plea was given and the matter was adjourned until next month.

The case relates to a collision that happened at about 2pm. Despite the efforts of the emergency crews Mr Griffiths was confirmed dead at the scene.

Roads were closed including the carriageway from the B4380 junction in Cressage to the Weeping Cross Island in Uffington.

Three ambulances and two Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford and Stafford attended the crash.

A female passenger in the Audi was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with rib and pelvic injuries.
