The drug, Pentylone and N-Ethylpentylone, they say has been seen at recent music festivals and has "severe adverse effects".

A statement from V Festival said: "Effects are nausea, vomiting, hypothermia, inability to sleep and agitation.

"Likely to be sold as MDMA, but it is actually a different substance and an extremely dangerous drug. Those taking won't expect the effect that it gives off. Effects are not like MDMA."

This comes as one boy, 17, was stopped at the entrance gates to the festival on Friday and arrested for having 200 pills.

A further boy, 16, was also arrested after being caught with MDMA.

Anyone who thinks they may have taken the substance should seek urgent medical attention.

People are also being asked to contact security or police if they are offered any suspicious substance.

Six men have also been arrested for a large quantity of class A drugs and another two for over 200 laughing gas canisters.

A Saffordshire Police spokesman said: "Following excellent surveillance work by plain clothes officers at the event, we identified six men that were distributing drugs between them with intent to deal them to festival-goers.

"Discovering a large quantity of what is believed to be ecstasy and a quantity of cocaine on their persons and in hidden compartments in their tents, our team arrested all six for possession with intent to supply. "

The arrested were a 38-year-old man from Crewe, a 29-year-old man from Crewe, a 28-year-old man from Chester, a 43-year-old man from Birkenhead, a 27-year-old man from Chester and a 45-year-old man from Birkenhead.

In addition two 18-year-old men from Ormskirk have also been arrested for possession with intent to supply after trying to smuggle in 220 nitrous oxide canisters, which is more commonly known as laughing gas.

Inspector Andrew Shackleton, onsite commander at V Festival, said: "At every moment we have officers out and about looking for suspicious behaviour and ready to act where appropriate. These latest arrests show that we will catch you at the gate or inside the festival, so just don't make the mistake of trying to bring drugs into V Festival."

Officers also arrested 10 men, with ages ranging from 16 to 26 years old, for possession of drugs including MDMA, ecstasy, cannabis, cocaine and ketamine.

In addition a 27-year-old man was arrested for a breach of bail conditions, a 23-year-old man was recalled to prison and a 33-year-old man was arrested for theft after being caught stealing £150 cash from a tent.
