'We are gutted': Thieves strike at country wedding in Shrewsbury stealing honeymoon flight money
A country wedding in Shropshire ended in heartbreak for the happy couple after their wedding presents and cards were stolen.
Holly and Bob Bibby tied the knot at Shrewsbury Registry Office before holding their wedding reception that afternoon and evening in a marquee in a friend’s field near to Brockton and Worthen.
The couple, who have been together for four years, celebrated with friends and family on Monday, into the early hours of Tuesday.
But when they returned to the marquee that morning after, they found that a handmade box, containing cards and cash, had disappeared. The box had only been left unattended inside the marquee for 45 minutes.
The pair, who live in Shrewsbury, had planned to spend the money they had been given as gifts on flights to Canada where Bob would catch up with his brothers who he has not seen for 14 years.
Holly, a carer who also works part time in a pub in Brockton, said: “We had a brilliant day and night but I am gutted that someone could have been so mean as to take the box and cards.
“My sister made the box herself for us and it meant a lot to me. Apart from the cash which were contained in the cards, there is also the sentimental value.
“We know the box was there during the reception and our friends then looked after it overnight. They put it back in the tent for my dad to pick up and it was then that it went missing.
“I don’t know exactly how much was in the box, but it was also my birthday and I know that people had given us money for our presents. There could have been anywhere between £400-£900.
“We were going to spend it on flights to Canada for our honeymoon but we may now have to put that back.
“We were going to see Bob’s brothers and he hasn’t seen them for 14 years.
“We got married at the registry office and then had a reception in a friend’s field.
“There was a marquee and we had a barbecue as well as having singers and a cocktail bar.
“It was brilliant and this was just a really horrible way of finishing off the wedding.”
The theft has been reported to the police who are now investigating.
Holly, 27, added: “It is awful to think I could have served the person who stole my wedding presents in the pub. We haven’t really got any idea who did it.
“Perhaps someone out there knows something. I know we won’t get the money back but it would be nice to have the cards and box.”
