Bird box ‘speed camera’ stolen in drunken prank

Angry motorists stole a bird box built like a speed camera from a pensioner’s garden.

John Lewis from Llangollen designed the box to stop people speeding near his home, as he feared someone would be injured.

The 79 year old was concerned about a possible fatality on the A5 and took the situation into his own hands.

But motorists were not happy with the new ‘camera’ and ripped it down in a drunken prank.

John said: “I think it must have been someone who had a few beers and carried it off because it’s too big to put in a car.

“It must be about eight feet long and is very heavy. It would take a few people to carry it. It was attached to the fence as well so that it wouldn’t wobble about in the wind.”

The box has now been returned and John plans to set it in concrete to deter thieves.

He also said he was prompted to install the ‘camera’ after a car crashed into his wall last year, and people are continuing to ignore the 30mph speed cameras.
