The 53-year-old from the Telford area, who did not wish to be named, said she was disgusted when she realised somebody had picked up the money and not handed it in after it fell out of her pocket during a shopping trip.

She bought some shopping from Home Bargains in Donnington on the afternoon of July 27 and didn’t realise that that the cash – which she planned to take to the bank – had fallen out of her pocket.

Shortly afterwards she noticed the missing money and returned, but it had already been taken.

Police are now investigating the theft and have released a CCTV image of a woman they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

The woman in the image is described as white with short bleached blonde hair, aged in her mid 50s. She was wearing a blue short sleeved top with cut outs on the shoulder.

“For all they could know, I was going to pay for a medical bill or something really serious like that,” the victim said.

“I try not to carry cash around with me anymore. I just use bank cards. Any money I have to carry, I give it to my son. I just don’t feel like I can take responsibility for it.

“I had just been told by my mum that my dad has the start of Alzheimer’s. I don’t think my head was on my shoulders at the time.

“A few years ago I had a stroke. I’m at hospital because of stress, not just because of this but it certainly hasn’t helped. This has really knocked me about. I’m so angry that anybody could be so dishonest.”

The victim said she had not been able to sleep when she realised someone had stolen the money.

“How could someone do something like this? They had every opportunity to hand that money in,” she said.

“My husband was annoyed when it happened, then became more concerned with how it affected me. His words to me was that it was only money – but it was only a lot of money. I just hope that somebody comes forward. Someone has to know what happened.”

Police have said a woman has come forward to assist with their inquiries.

Anybody with information about the incident is asked to call 101 citing reference 564S 270717.
