The man, who was wearing a green hat over his face with eyes cut out of it, managed to get away with cash during the robbery at Robson Stores on Ellesmere Road.
He entered the store at about 12.50pm on Saturday, produced the blade and threatened a member of staff and demanding access to the till.
He then stole cash from the till before getting away.
The man is described as a white, approximately 5ft 9in tall with slim build and with a local accent.
He is believed to have been wearing a dark coloured hooded top with a light coloured zip on the front, grey tracksuit bottoms with dark trainers and had grey, black and white gloves on.
