Booze ban success at Wem family funfair
An alcohol ban at an annual fair in Wem has been hailed as a success.
Police said there was one public order arrest on Wem Recreation Ground on Saturday, after the fun fair closed.
Officers warned residents that nobody was able to enter the recreational ground with alcohol between 7pm and 10pm on Saturday.
The town council said they wanted to impose the ban as they wanted the fair to be a family-friendly event.
Constable David Carpenter, based at Wem police station, said the ban had been a success.
He added: "This is not the first year the alcohol ban has been imposed, we have gradually enforced it over the past three years.
"However, we have had great support from the carnival committee, town council and Fred Wright from the funfair, enabling us to make the entrances more secure.
"There was only one public order arrest on the recreation ground and that was after the funfair had closed, so by and large the ban was a success, creating a safer and more friendly area for members of the public young and old."
