Police helicopter scrambled as stolen Land Rover abandoned near Newport

Police recovered a stolen car after it was abandoned in Shropshire.

The red Land Rover Defender was found after residents reported that people were spotted acting suspiciously off the A41 near Sambrook, north of Newport.

West Mercia Police scrambled the force helicopter and a dog team to the area.

PC Lee Thomas, of the Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Police were called to reports of people acting suspiciously just off the A41 near Sambrook north of Newport at approximately 8.20pm on Tuesday.

"A red Land Rover Defender was seen leaving the area at speed and subsequently failed to stop for attending police officers.

"A police helicopter and police dog also attended the location and the vehicle was located abandoned a while later a short distance across the Staffordshire border.

"The vehicle was found to have been stolen in August from the Shrewsbury area and was recovered by police for forensic examination. Despite an extensive search by the helicopter no offenders were located."

The OPU team posted on Twitter that they also seized a red car that failed to stop for the team in Telford on Tuesday and was found abandoned nearby by the driver who is suspected of not having insurance to drive it.

On Monday a silver Citroen was pulled over and confiscated, in Stirchley Road, Stirchley, after officers received a tip-off that it was been driven by a banned driver.
