The 1970s-built underpasses along Brookside Avenue, Brookside, will be filled with foam concrete.

There were more than 100 reported crimes in the underpasses during 2016 alone.

The project, by contractor Fitzgerald's will take about 18 weeks to complete and some 1,000 cubic metres of foam concrete and 1,200 cubic metres of filler material will be used.

Preparatory work has now begun, and the filling in of the first of the underpasses will begin later this week.

Work has also started on the first phase of demolition at the Ironbridge Power Station.

Contractors Keltbray have began knocking down two conveyors at the power station in Buildwas yesterday.

The removal of the small section of the site is being done for safety reasons and will make way for the full clearing of the site, which is set to take place in 2018 following approval for the work by Shropshire Council.

Uniper, which took over the decommissioning of the site from energy company Eon, says conveyors six and seven and the accompanying conveyor tower need to be brought down because they are deteriorating structurally.

The company is still looking for a buyer for the site, which was officially switched off on November 20, 2015, after 46 years of service.
