Paul McLafferty, 48, denied injuring Aled Davies during a confrontation in the car park at Hadley United Services Club, in Telford, on July 4.

The men were guests at a 30th birthday party when trouble flared at the end of the night between two other men, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told on Tuesday.

Mr Ian Withridge told the jury: “The fracas ended with Mr Davies being struck in the face by way of an head-butt by Paul MacLafferty. Mr Davies was feeling uncomfortable and he and his partner went home. The following afternoon he was still feeling uncomfortable and went to the hospital in Telford where after checks he was found to have fractures to his upper jaw and fractures to both cheekbones.”

Giving evidence Mr Davies, a taxi driver, told the jury he had subsequently underwent surgery for his injuries.

He said there had been a scuffle inside the premises between two men Nick Bloomer and Luke Byles. He told the court that he and his partner Paula Rajput(cor) tried to separate the two men and he went to help her when he was assaulted by McLafferty, whom he had never met.

Under cross examination by Miss Debra White, defending, Mr Davies said he was not drunk at the time and had consumed no more than five pints of lager.

McLafferty, of Bufton Lane, Doseley, denies an offence of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The trial continues.
