Archie Spriggs: Inquest opened on seven-year-old boy

An inquest was opened today on a seven-year-old boy found dead in a village near Church Stretton.

Archie Spriggs was found dead at a house on Rushbury Road in Wall under Heywood on Thursday evening.

His mother Lesley Speed, 44, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in hospital where she is receiving medical treatment for 'significant injuries to her neck and arm'.

Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Police have said detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Coroner's officer Julie Hartridge read a short statement during the inquest opening at Shirehall, in Shrewsbury, today.

She said police had been called to a residence on Rushbury Road at 6.30pm on September 21 following concern for its occupants, and that the seven-year-old had been found dead at the property.

She said: "A post mortem has been conducted and the cause of death is pending investigation."

Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Coroner John Ellery adjourned the inquest until January 9, 2018.

Earlier this week, Archie's family released a brief statement: "Archie's father, step-mum, brother and family are facing challenging times and would like to ask for our privacy to be respected while we come to terms with this devastating loss."
