Sarah Jane Ellis, 23, of Gallowstree Bank, appeared before Welshpool Magistrates Court yesterday to face the charge.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said a police officer was travelling in Newtown when he witnessed a car veer onto the centre white lines.

The officer followed the car and stopped it, with Ellis, a caterer, getting out.

She gave a breath test of 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 35 microgrammes.

Mrs Tench said there were aggravating factors as there were passengers in the car at the time.

Robert Hanratty, for Ellis, said there was no suggestion she had veered over to the other side of the road or caused any danger.

He said his client was surprised she had blown a reading of 58.

He added that Ellis had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, and "never intends to be in court again".

Magistrates fined her £360 and banned her from driving for a year. She was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £36 victim surcharge.
