Man, 35, denies assault and damage charges after centre of Ellesmere evacuated during incident

A 35-year-old man has denied a number of charges including assault and causing criminal damaging after the centre of Ellesmere was evacuated.

John Wellings, of Scotland Street, Ellesmere, was charged after police were called to a property on Scotland Street at about 11.20pm on Tuesday following reports of disorder and criminal damage.

Wellings appeared at Telford Magistrates Court yesterday) where he pleaded not guilty to charges of assault on a person causing actual bodily harm, causing criminal damage to property valued under £5,000, affray, and threatening a person with a blade/sharply pointed article in a public place.

He is now due to appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court for trial on December 18.

Officers sealed off Scotland Street, urging the public to stay away from the area while the incident was ongoing on Tuesday. The road was reopened within an hour.
