Man injured in Wem bottle attack, court told
A man was left with significant facial injuries after a bottle was broken on his face in Wem town centre, a court heard.
Arron Chelmick, 25, is alleged to have thrown a bottle at Ben Golding’s head on the afternoon of July 6, 2017.
Following that altercation, it is then alleged Chelmick got Mr Golding in a headlock and had a glass bottle under his arm which smashed in the face of the victim, causing him ‘significant’ injuries.
Chelmick, of High Street, Wem, claims he acted in self defence, and denies a count of wounding with intent and another charge of unlawful wounding.
Opening the trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday, Timothy Sapwell, prosecuting, said Mr Golding had gone into the centre of Wem with a group of friends on the afternoon of July 6, where Chelmick was also with friends.
An argument began between the two groups, before Chelmick is alleged to have thrown a bottle of beer which struck the victim on the back of his head.
The jury was told Chelmick then got the the victim in a headlock under his right arm, and placed the bottle under his arm, before it smashed in Mr Golding’s face.
It caused a significant cut to his chin and below his eye, the jury was told.
The defendant then left the scene, while Mr Golding was sent to hospital and required 18 stitches to close the wound he suffered.
Later that day, Chelmick was arrested and interviewed by police, where he said he had been acting in self defence.
He denies throwing the bottle in the first instance, and then smashing the bottle in the victim’s face.
The trial continues.
