Newport murder probe: Churches open their doors in memory of shooting victim Cheryl Hooper

Churches are opening their doors for people who want to pay their respects to Newport murder victim Cheryl Hooper.

St Andrews Church in Wallshead Way, Church Aston, is inviting people to light a candle, say a prayer or just have a quiet time in memory of the 51-year-old who was killed in Farmers Lane on Friday night.

It comes as investigations continue into her death.

A 45-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder was under police guard in hospital. He is being treated for gunshot wounds.

St Michael and All Angels’ in Lilleshall will also open for prayer or support throughout the rest of the week.

It will be open from 10.30am until 5pm today through to Friday.

Police activity in Newport

Police community support officers will be at the church.

Both churches also have books of condolences for visitors to sign.

Tributes have also been left for Cheryl on Facebook.

Lin Williams said: "RIP Cheryl. Thoughts with your daughter."

West Mercia Police said that murder investigation inquiries are ongoing after Ms Hooper died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
