More than 100 drivers either refused to give a breath test or tested positive during December, new figures have shown.

The 126 who failed the drink-drive test in the West Mercia area during Christmas equated to four per cent of all motorists who were breathalysed.

An extra 107 people in the area also failed the new roadside drugs test as part of the campaign.

West Mercia Police chief constable Anthony Bangham said he was disappointed drivers were still risking lives by taking to the wheel while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

He said: “Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs is completely unacceptable. It’s encouraging the percentage of those drivers caught over the limit remains low in our area but it’s concerning that we still have drivers out there who are willing to risk it.

“We are committed to tackling this issue and enforcing the drink and drug drive law is a top priority for West Mercia Police into 2018.”

West Mercia Police said drink-drivers would be targeted all-year round and not just during the Christmas period.

Figures indicate that, over the past three years, 13 people were killed and 109 seriously injured in the West Mercia Police area, which includes Shropshire, following crashes where drink or drugs were involved.
