Julian Bell, 42, of Woodrow, Woodside, had been convicted of twice raping the victim by a jury at a trial held at Shrewsbury Crown Court last December.

His victim was punched, beaten and choked to the point of being unconscious during the rape.

Bell had denied rape but admitted assault causing her actual bodily harm during the incident in July last year.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Peter Barrie said he had considered reports and Bell’s previous convictions for violence and deemed him a risk to women.

“In your trial while giving evidence it appeared you did not care about the level of violence used and that you were entitled to use violence when the victim refused to have sex with you,” he said.

He added that reports indicated impulsive and psychotic behaviour.

Bell was sentenced to a ten-and-a-half year extended sentence which includes eight-and-a-half years immediate custody with a two-year extended licence period.

Mr John Williams, for Bell, said his client had been diagnosed with an anti-social personality disorder and there was a background of significant abuse in a ‘sad’ upbringing.
