Telford man jailed for glass attack on kind woman who helped him out
A Telford man who was invited into a woman’s home because he was freezing on the streets has been jailed for striking her with a glass.
Jason Rixon, 42 of Southgate, Sutton Hill, was invited back to the victim’s home on September 30 but when he was woken in the morning he swore at her and struck her with a glass, causing profuse bleeding.
Rixon denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was due to appear for trial at Telford Magistrates Court in February, but he was found guilty in his absence.
At Shrewsbury Crown Court on Wednesday Judge Peter Barrie jailed Rixon for nine months due to his history of violent offending and failure to comply with court orders.
Judge Barriee told Rixon: “You have a record of violence, abused her hospitality and there is no sensible explanation for it.”
Graham Russell, prosecuting, told the court how the victim told police her contact with Rixon was “random”. She saw him outside Iceland in Wellington, where he said he was freezing.
She invited him back to her bedsit, where he asked to have the bed, but he was told to sleep on the sofa. The next day the woman entered her bathroom, which when turning on the light triggered an extractor fan.
When the fan started, Rixon swore at the woman and said he was trying to sleep, and she replied that it was her home.
Rixon then picked up a pint glass. He went towards her and struck her on the head with the glass, causing a small cut.
History of violence
Mr Russell told the court Rixon had been in court on 47 occasions for 132 offences, and had a history of violence, including wounding, battery and actually bodily harm.
Kevin Jones, for Rixon, said his client was not at his trial as he was due to go into an operation for a broken arm, and he intended to appeal his conviction.
However, he told the court Rixon, a qualified carpenter, who has a qualification in sports science, put himself in that position due to the chaotic lifestyle he was leading.
Mr Jones asked for a suspended sentence to be put in place, but Judge Barrie disagreed, and said Rixon "is old enough to know better," before jailing him for nine months.
