The items, which included a number of BB guns, were handed in by stunned housing maintenance workers who discovered them while clearing out an empty property in Dawley.

The collection featured a 10 bore double-barrelled shotgun, a 410 single-barrel shotgun, four replica pistols and a knife with a 6in blade.

Pc Rob Hughes, of Donnington Safer Neighbourhood Team, explained that the items were found by Wrekin Housing Trust staff who working at a property.

"They were clearing out the property when they came across the weapon collection that was left behind by a previous tenant.

"Fortunately it was found by the right people, who recognised the significance of what they had seen.

"So much so that they immediately put them in a box, got into their vehicle and brought it straight to us.

"The shotguns are the genuine article although one is a little damaged, but if someone with the wrong motive were to point these items at someone it would potentially be a frightening situation.

"The important thing is that they are off the streets."
