The figures from a freedom of information request reveal that Market Drayton ranks 9th in the country for the number of thefts or robberies near cash machines per resident.

It means that when taking population into account, the town is more dangerous for cash machine users than Birmingham, Manchester and London.

West Mercia Police has dealt with 416 ATM thefts in the past decade, while West Midlands Police handled 326.

Kevin Pratt, consumer affairs expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “This police data highlights the importance of being vigilant and cautious when using an ATM, even in a quiet market town where you might not expect to encounter a problem.

"Cash is still king as far as many criminals are concerned, and ATMs are their ideal hunting ground.

“If someone robs your cash or steals your card, you should immediately report it to the police. Report a stolen credit or debit card and cancel it immediately, and keep an eye out for fraudulent transactions on your account.”

The town with the most ATM thefts per resident is Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, with one in 415 people targeted.
