Benjamin Worrall, of Bescot Road, Walsall, broke into a house in Claverley.

He caused £1,500 of damage to the door and two smashed windows, Stafford Crown Court heard.

The 18-year-old then went to make his getaway in the householder’s F-Type Jaguar after guzzling three or four bottles of Lucozade but the car proved to powerful for him and he lost control as he started the engine and hit a stone wall.

After triggering an alarm, he then disappeared into nearby woodland before entering the garden of a property in Seisdon Road, Trysull, where he was challenged by the occupant and made off.

Police were called and chased him on foot with a dog unit after spotting him in a nearby fields, where he was arrested on July 16. Representing himself, Worrall pleaded guilty on August 31 at Stafford Crown Court to burglary of a dwelling, aggravated vehicle taking and being on enclosed premises.

Judge Michael Chambers, sentencing, said: “You need to see that burglaries of houses are a serious matter as you are trespassing in other people’s homes.”

He added he had taken into account Worrall’s circumstances, who had been in custody since his arrest. Worrall was given a two-year community order and told to complete 100 hours’ unpaid work. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
