The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, was arrested in June after the death of 42-year-old Derek Whyteside, who was found unconscious in Telford.
Mr Whyteside, of Chesterfield Road, Dawley, died after being found in Withywood Drive, Malinslee.
A jury panel of six men and six women was today sworn in at Stafford Crown Court to try the teenager, whose trial is expected to last for around a week.
The Crown's case is expected to be opened by prosecutor Kevin Hegarty QC on Tuesday.
