Police spotted a VW Golf after spotting it being driven erratically in Erdington in the early hours of the morning.

Officers tried to stop the Golf at the junction of Chester Road and Orphanage Road but the driver sped off.

A few minutes later different police officers came across the car, which had crashed into the central reservation.

A 24-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Sergeant Ade Brown, from West Midlands Police's Traffic Unit, said: “I would urge anyone who witnessed the lead up to the collision or has any information to get in touch.

“We are appealing in particular to a significant witness who spoke with officers at the scene but we have been unable to trace since.”

The incident has been referred to the force’s Professional Standards Department and the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Anyone with information about the collision, or witnessed what happened, is asked to contact the force on 101, quoting log 153 of 1/12/18.
