Jailed: Shrewsbury man deliberately drove car into woman on pavement

The judge at Shrewsbury Crown Court told Jay Quade that he had used the car as a weapon and it was lucky the woman had not been more seriously hurt.

Judge Peter Barrie jailed Quade, 22, of Grosvenor Green, after the defendant pleaded guilty to dangerous driving on Lancaster Road, in the town on July 20 this year.

Mr Robert Edwards, prosecuting, said the incident followed a history of disputes between Quade and the son of the pedestrian, Cathy Goddard.

On July 20 she was walking along the pavement on Lancaster Road, he said.

“The next thing she knew she was being struck and was in the air,” he added.

“She landed on the pavement and noticed a white car bumper directly behind her.

“She looked up and saw that the defendant was the driver.”

Mr Edwards said Ms Goddard hurt her left leg and also complained of pain in her back and hips.

“Quade drove along that road, saw three pedestrians on the pavement and drove his VW, not at excessive speed, towards them, mounting the pavement,” he said.

Apologise

The court was told that Quade had 30 previous convictions including shoplifting, burglary and drug offences.

Mr Kevin Jones, for Quade, said his client had got out of the car after hitting the pedestrian to apologise to her, saying: “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry”.

He said that Quade realised that he needed to grow up.

His partner was having a baby in January and he wanted to be able to support the family that was on the way.

Judge Barrie said: “You used your car as a weapon to hit someone who was walking on the pavement.

“Whatever had gone on between you and her son does not excuse the way you deliberately drove at her.

“She had injuries to her back, hip and leg but mercifully no broken bones.

“You may have been driving at low speed for the road, but it was not low speed for the pavement.”

He said Quade would have to serve half of his sentence in jail before being released on licence.
