Naveed Hussain was convicted by a jury after a week-long trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

The 18-year-old, who was 16 at the time of the attack, was brought into court from a young offenders’ institution where he is currently serving a sentence for violent disorder.

He denied two counts of rape and one of sexual assault but was found guilty of all three.

The court heard the charges related to one incident which had lasted around 15 minutes.

Prosecutor Mr Stephen Thomas said the attack had left the victim feeling depressed.

Miss Samantha Forsyth, defending, said Hussain, of Crescent Road, Hadley, had been a schoolboy at the time of the incident and had later begun an engineering course at college.

He was remanded in custody in April of this year ahead of his sentencing in November for violent disorder, when he and two others were each locked up for two years and eight months.

Miss Forsyth added: “This is still a young man who is bright and has a future ahead of him.”

Judge Anthony Lowe said he had to consider Hussain’s age at the time of the attack, and the fact that he, at that point, had no previous convictions.

Judge Lowe also said he had to take Hussain’s current sentence into account, which would inevitably make the rape sentence seem “lenient”.

He sentenced Hussain to one year and 10 months, consecutive to his current sentence, to make a total of four-and-a-half years.

He must register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Pc Laura Hutson, of West Mercia Police, said: "We would like to praise this victim for her bravery and courage in coming forward and hope that this provides other victims with the confidence to report such matters to the police."
