Fine for Shrewsbury man who elbowed police officer in the face
A Shrewsbury man who elbowed a police officer in the face after he was arrested for something he did not do has been fined more than £500.
Russell Corvers, of Abbey Foregate in Shrewsbury, pleaded guilty to assaulting a constable in the execution of his duty and was fined £558 by magistrates in Telford yesterday.
The court heard the 38-year-old was 'flailing his arms' around and refusing to enter a police vehicle when he was arrested for a separate matter, before elbowing a police officer.
Prosecuting, Sara Beddow said: "The defendant elbowed an officer who was trying to arrest him.
"On December 19, 2018, the defendant was arrested for an unrelated matter. Police officers were trying to put him in the vehicle. He was flailing his arms about and he was taken to the ground in an attempt to wrestle the officers.
"An officer attempted to take him by the arm and he proceeded to elbow the officer in the face."
The court heard Corvers has one previous conviction dating back to 2005.
Gurdeep Singh, mitigating, said: "The defendant hasn't appeared before the courts for quite some time now.
"He was arrested for another matter that was not taken further and therefore he was frustrated he was arrested for something he didn't do.
"He admits he was flailing his arms around and has apologised to the officer."
Sentencing, chairwoman Jennifer Nailor, said: "We understand that you have apologised to the officer and we have read your letter to the magistrates and have come up with the following fine."
Corvers was fined a total of £558, including £135 court costs, £100 compensation to the officer involved and a £30 victim surcharge.
