Sean Kennedy lost control of a Range Rover, knocked down a lamp post, crashed into three vehicles and demolished part of a wall before coming to a standstill in Bescot Road, Walsall.

He ran away and managed to climb onto the garage of a house in a desperate hunt for an escape route but fell through the roof causing thousands of pounds worth of damage, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The 27-year-old went to hide among the undergrowth in a garden where he was found by a police dog which bit him.

Kennedy gave himself up and confessed to police: “I am an idiot. I got banned and hadn’t been out in a car since.”

He landed in trouble after taking his mother’s Range Rover to collect the repayment of a debt five months after being disqualified from driving for a year, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Police suspected the car was stolen after seeing a man travelling alone in a vehicle insured by a woman, said Mr Edward Soulsby, prosecuting.

They ordered him to stop so they could check the details of the driver who appeared to be coming to a halt before suddenly accelerating.

Mr Makkan Shoker, defending, conceded: “It was an appalling piece of driving. A friend was in a position to repay a debt and he went to collect it.”

Kennedy, from Highfield Avenue, Burntwood, Cannock admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, having no insurance and damaging property.

He was given an eight month jail term suspended for 18 months with a four month night time curfew. He was also banned from driving for two years.
