Probe after racial abuse aimed at Leyton Orient player during AFC Telford cup match

Racial abuse aimed at a Leyton Orient player in Saturday’s FA Trophy clash with AFC Telford United is being investigated by the club.

A number of reports have been made regarding clashes between fans.

This afternoon the club has confirmed several reports have been made regarding an individual who was made subject to racist abuse.

Objects were also thrown into the pitch and towards the away dugout, and that FA have been informed.

A statement said: “In light of recent posts on social media, AFC Telford United can confirm we have received several reports over the weekend informing us of a number of incidents that took place on Saturday both inside and outside the stadium.

“We would like to thank everyone who provided us with statements and images.

“We can confirm we have also received several reports of an individual who directed racist abuse at an opposition player as well as several supporters who threw a number of objects onto the field of play above the away dug out. These incidents have been reported to the FA as they were picked up on the match officials report.”

It has marred what was an occasion that saw the Bucks attract their biggest crowd in recent years.

Disrepute

The club has said it is committed to taking action and information is being passed to the police.

The statement added: “As a football club we will not tolerate behaviour which brings our name into disrepute, and we are committed to taking action wherever we have evidence. We will also share information with the Police so that criminal proceedings can be considered.

“No further comment will be made at this time.”

A statement on Twitter from the football club said the individuals involved will be dealt with in the correct manner.

The statement said: “AFC Telford United are aware of a number of incidents from Saturday's game, we will be working with the appropriate authorities to ensure these individuals are dealt with in the correct manner @MPSFootballUnit.”

Telford lost 2-1 to Leyton Orient, missing out on a Wembley appearance at the final hurdle.
