Vasilic Tobos, 20, allegedly punched the victim and grabbed at her clothing at a bus stop, in Bridgnorth Road, shortly after 4am on January 27 this year.

Yesterday the recycling depot worker told a jury at Shrewsbury Crown Court said he had not been watching the alleged victim when he saw her earlier that night at a late opening public house.

Mr Paul Smith, defence barrister, asked Tobos: "Had you sexually assaulted anybody?"

Speaking through an interpretor Tobos replied: "No."

He said he initially told the police that he had walked home with a friend and accepted that he was seen on security cameras in the area, walking alone.

"I was scared I never had these problems before," Tobos said.

In his police interview Tobos, from Romania, denied being responsible. The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told police her attacker spoke with a foreign accent.

She had been waiting for her boyfriend to collect her. Tobos, of Blakemore, Brookside, in Telford, denies sexual assault.

The trial continues.
