'I saw a hammer being swung and hitting the person on the floor': Witness tells court of Telford attack
A former healthcare assistant told a court how she wanted to go to the aid of a youth as hammer blows rained down on him in a Telford attack.
Kyle Turner, 33, and Matthew Walls, 32, are currently on trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court for attacking the teenager in King Street, Dawley, on June 19 this year.
The youth suffered a broken eye socket, a cut eyelid and a laceration on his arm.
Anita Chant-Clift was driving to work when she saw the incident unfold at around 8am. She recorded dashcam footage in her car.
Giving evidence in court, she said: "As I was going up the hill, a silver van pulled out in front of me. It stopped diagonally in the middle of the road and started to beep its horn.
The case so far:
"As I looked to my left I saw some lads dressed in dark clothing. I thought they were school kids having a scuffle.
"There were three of them standing over one on the floor. I saw a lad on the floor being attacked. I saw a hammer being swung and hitting the person on the floor. Some were kicking and punching.
"At this point I was on the phone to the ambulance so it was difficult to keep watching. I wanted to go to the lad but I couldn't because the attack was still happening. People were coming and shouting."
Ms Chant-Clift said the men she perceived to be the attackers then fled.
She added: "I got out of my car and went to the lad to treat him and see what his injuries were. I started administering first aid. The police arrived first. I stayed with him until the ambulance service came and took over."
Kevin Jones, defending Turner, questioned Ms Chant-Clift's account because she said in her initial police statement that she didn't see hammer blows being struck. But she told him: "At the time I gave the statement I was shaking like a leaf."
Turner and Walls, both of King Street, Dawley, deny wounding with intent against the teenager. They also each deny a charge of having an unlawful weapon - Turner a hammer and Walls a machete.
The trial continues.
