Timothy Archer bumped into his ex-partner at a West Bromwich Social Club on October 26 last year some time after their relationship finished but they had remained friends, a judge was told.

A large amount of alcohol was drunk and at the end of the evening she offered to give the 54-year-old defendant a lift to his home, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Archer accepted but after the journey started he suddenly "flipped" and started slapping her face, said Mr Simon Warlock, prosecuting.

By the time they reached the address she was "petrified" and so frightened she did what she was told when ordered inside the flat where the violence got worse.

A neighbour claimed to have seen Archer punch the woman eight or nine times with all his power "like a boxer" until she slumped to the floor, continued the prosecutor.

She suffered heavy bruising which made her face look "like a football" but fortunately no bones were broken.

One of the police officers called to the scene said the injuries were the worst he had seen after domestic violence in his ten years of service, the court was told.

A Taser was pointed at the defendant, who had drunk a "large amount," but did not need to be fired as he calmed down and was arrested, it was said.

The victim did not support the prosecution and declined to make a victim impact statement, concluded Mr Warnock.

"It was a chance meeting and he has little or no knowledge of what happened after her bought her a drink at the club and was shocked when he saw pictures of the injured party, " said Mr Bernard Porter, defending, who added: "He is absolutely disgusted with himself and apologises to her."

Archer, from Poets Court, Old Meeting Street, West Bromwich admitted assault and was jailed by Judge Dean Kershaw who told him: "Alcohol is a real issue for you and, for whatever reason, you flipped.

"When you had finished her face looked like a football. It was horrific."

The defendant has been made the subject of a restraining order banning any contact with the victim.
