Man jailed after driving at 30mph along pavement during chase
A banned motorist, who drove a stolen car along a stretch of pavement at 30mph during a four-minute police chase, has been jailed for a year.
Alan Moseley was at the wheel of a blue Smart car on his way to buy drugs when spotted by officers on patrol in Walsall at 4.20pm on January 13, a judge heard.
The 41-year-old, who developed a £70-a-day cocaine habit after his relationship broke down, panicked and put his foot down when he realised the police were following him, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.
Moseley reached 64mph in a 30 limit before a queue of traffic blocked his path but he mounted the pavement for around 50 yards while undertaking the stationary vehicles and swept passed a bus shelter, which fortunately was empty, before returning to the carriageway, explained Mr Howard Searle, prosecuting.
He hit 65mph before ignoring a “Road Closed” sign and heading down Norton Road in Pelsall where the defendant crashed and was arrested.
Mr Ranjit Sandhu, defending, said plasterer Moseley had borrowed the car – reported stolen in Walsall in August 2018 – to buy drugs but was not under the influence of them or drink during the chase.
Moseley, from Holden Crescent, Coalpool, Walsall, who had several previous convictions for motoring offences, pleaded guilty to driving dangerously while disqualified and uninsured.
He was jailed and banned from driving for two years on release by Judge Rhona Campbell who told him: “This was a really serious piece of dangerous driving in which you drove along the pavement at 30mph at a time when school children were likely to be walking around.”
