Woman who lied to police about violent partner's journey to assault victim is found guilty
A woman who gave a false alibi for a man who attacked his heavily pregnant ex-partner with a hammer has been found guilty of perverting the course of justice.
But the man who had been accused of driving the attacker to Market Drayton has been cleared.
Joanne Terry, 44, of Barnard Close in Birmingham was the partner of Daniel Tandy in October 2018 when he travelled from their home in Birmingham to his ex-partner's home in Market Drayton.
He savagely beat the woman, who was eight months pregnant, with a hammer. She received fractures but the baby survived.
Tandy, 27, of Brook Road in Oldbury, admitted causing grievous bodily harm but Terry went on trial accused of perverting the course of justice, by telling police that he was at home on the night of the attack.
She maintained that they went to sleep separately that night and he could have left without her knowledge, but at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Thursday a jury convicted her.
Her co-defendant was Kyle Emery, 21, of Tennal Lane in Harborne, who was accused of taking part in the grievous bodily harm by deliberately driving Tandy to the house. His car was detected travelling between Birmingham and Market Drayton on the night.
The jury found him not guilty.
Terry and Tandy, who are no longer a couple, will be sentenced after reports are prepared – it has been provisionally set to take place during the first week in March.
