With the upcoming 2021 census day, the police force has warned that criminals may use this as a scamming opportunity.

Households across the UK are currently receiving letters which include a unique 16-digit code to access the census online.

The police said that criminals could use this as an opportunity to send phishing emails or texts.

To prevent scams they issued the following advice: you will only be contacted about the census via letter – never email, text or phone.

When filling out the census you will only ever be asked for personal details such as date of birth, address, and occupation – never asked to provide financial details or national insurance number.
