William Saunders, who is now 24 years old, has denied two charges of rape and attempted rape against a woman.
The offences are alleged to have taken place in 2018, when he was a student at Harper Adams University, near Newport.
A jury was sworn in at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday and then heard evidence from the complainant under Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) protocols for vulnerable witnesses.
The defendant, of Derrydown Road, Birmingham, denies both charges and the trial continues.
